It started off as a joke... My husband is the youth leader at our local church and found out a few years ago that one of our youth moms grew up in a small PA town called Shamokin (no kidding!). From there it grew - joking that the youth would one day take a road trip to Shamokin, PA! Last year was their pilot journey and this year Luke, Blake and I joined the group for their "annual" retreat! It was a long drive but we passed some pretty scenery and cute small towns. However - I questioned why there's not more PA jokes - why all the WV jokes? There should be (No offense to my PA friends! We love ya but you know it's true!) When we pulled into the campground I immediately burst into laughter. It looked like a hobo camp. I have never seen so many camp sites packed into an area. We were staying in the cabins which were pretty cool. The boys LOVED bunking in the loft! For so many folks to be packed together - there were no problems. Knobels' campground does not skimp on the security. The attraction is the nearby old-fashioned amusement park - complete with carousel, ferris wheel, classic haunted house, funnel cakes, etc. Our host family held a cookout the last night with fabulous food and showed us the greatest hospitality. This was our first trip of the summer (I'll post on the others later) and got us off to a great start! I would venture to say there's not a whole lotta families who can check Shamokin, PA off their list of adventures!
